How Much Does It Cost to Publish a Book? A Clear Breakdown for 2026

What's free, what you pay for, what ISBNs and distribution really cost, and how publishing packages and writing services are priced.

"How much does it cost to publish a book?" is usually the first question authors ask us, and the honest answer is: it depends on how much of the work you do yourself. Uploading a book to Amazon costs nothing. Turning a manuscript into a book that looks professional, with clean editing, a strong cover and a properly formatted interior, is where the real costs are.

This guide breaks those costs down: what is genuinely free, what you will pay for if you self-publish, what ISBNs and distribution cost, how publishing packages are priced, and what changes if you need help writing the book in the first place. Third-party prices below were checked in November 2026. Platforms change their fees, so confirm them before you budget.

The short answer

Your routeWhat you pay forTypical cost
Do everything yourselfYour time, plus optional ISBNsNo platform setup fee; ISBNs optional (see below)
Self-publish with a publishing packageEditing, cover design, formatting, ISBN, distributionOur packages: $250, $750 or $1,500

Traditional publishingNothing up front; the publisher pays production costsYou give up some rights and most of the royalties

Most first-time authors land in the second row: they have a finished manuscript and want it to look and read like a professionally published book, without giving up their rights.

What's free (or nearly free)

The publishing platforms themselves cost very little to use:

  • Amazon KDP has no fee to publish. For paperbacks and hardcovers, KDP prints each copy on demand and subtracts the printing cost from your royalty, so you never pay for a print run up front (KDP printing cost).
  • KDP offers a free ISBN for paperbacks and hardcovers, but that ISBN can only be used on KDP. For Kindle eBooks an ISBN is optional (KDP ISBN help).
  • IngramSpark charges no title setup fee and removed its revision fees from February 1, 2026. Books enabled for its distribution network pay a 1.875% market access fee (IngramSpark).

So technically, you can publish a book for close to nothing. The catch is that the platforms publish exactly the files you upload. If the manuscript has errors, the cover looks homemade or the interior is badly formatted, readers see it in the free preview and in the reviews.

What you actually pay for when you self-publish

These are the costs that make the difference between a book that looks self-published and one that looks professionally published.

Editing

Editing is usually the biggest single cost, and the one most worth paying for. There are several levels: developmental editing looks at structure, pacing and argument; line and copy editing work sentence by sentence; proofreading catches the last typos before publication. The price depends on the length of your manuscript, how polished it already is and how many levels it needs.

Do as much self-editing as you can before you hire an editor. A cleaner draft takes less time to edit. Our book editing and formatting services cover every level.

Cover design

Readers judge a book by its cover, especially as a small thumbnail in an online store. A professional cover is designed for your genre, uses readable type at thumbnail size and, for print, includes a back cover and a spine sized to your page count. Interior formatting and typesetting

Print and eBook interiors need different files. Print needs set margins, page numbers, running heads and a trim size; eBooks need reflowable files that display well on every device. Books with images, tables or poetry line breaks take more work to format than straight text. Always order a printed proof before release: problems with margins, fonts or image quality are much easier to spot on paper than on screen.

ISBNs and barcodes

Each format of your book (eBook, paperback, hardcover) needs its own ISBN. In the US, ISBNs are sold by Bowker. As of November 2026, Bowker lists one ISBN at $125, ten at $295 and 100 at $575, and one ISBN with a barcode at $150 (Bowker).

A free platform ISBN saves money, but it only works on that platform and lists the platform rather than you as the publisher. If you plan to sell in several stores, or publish more than one book, buying your own ISBNs is usually the better choice.

Distribution

Getting your book into stores is mostly free (see above). What you pay for is someone setting it up correctly across several platforms: metadata, categories, keywords, pricing in each market and the author page. Done badly, a book can be live and still be hard to find.

Marketing

Marketing is the most flexible cost. Some authors spend nothing and build readers through their own network, events and social media; others pay for press releases, advertising or a book trailer. Decide on a budget before you publish, not after. At minimum, plan for a clear book description, the right categories and keywords, and an author page, because these cost little and decide whether readers can find your book at all. Our Author package includes keyword integration and Amazon Look Inside, and Publishing Pro adds a press release, a video book trailer and Amazon A+ Content.

Author copies

With print on demand there is no print run to pay for. You only pay for the copies you order yourself, for events, gifts or reviewers, at the printing cost plus shipping.

What if you haven't written the book yet?

Writing is a separate cost from publishing, and it is priced by the scope of the project: the length of the book, the research involved, the number of interviews and the timeline. A memoir built from a few long interviews is a different project from a researched business book. That is why we quote writing services individually rather than listing a single price.

As a guide to timelines, a typical 50,000 to 70,000-word ghostwritten manuscript takes three to six months, and most memoirs take four to six months from the first interview to the finished book. What about traditional publishing?

With a traditional publisher, you pay nothing up front. The publisher covers editing, design, printing and distribution. In exchange, the publisher controls the rights it buys, makes the final decisions on the cover and the price, and pays you a royalty that is a share of each sale. Getting a deal usually means finding a literary agent first, and the process can take a long time.

A legitimate traditional publisher does not ask you to pay to be published. If a "publisher" offers you a contract and then asks for money, treat it as a paid publishing service and compare it on those terms. How to keep your publishing costs down

  • Finish and self-edit the manuscript before you pay for editing. Every pass you do yourself saves editing time.
  • Pay for what your book needs, not everything on offer. A clean, finished manuscript may only need proofreading, not a developmental edit.
  • Use print on demand instead of a print run, so you never store unsold boxes of books.
  • Decide early whether you need your own ISBNs. Buying a block of ten costs less per ISBN if you plan several formats or books.
  • Get every quote in writing, with exactly what is included and what costs extra.
  • Check who owns the rights. Paying for help should never mean giving up your copyright or a share of your royalties.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to self-publish a book?

Uploading a book to Amazon KDP or IngramSpark has no setup fee, so the platforms cost little or nothing. The real costs are editing, cover design, formatting and, if you want your own, ISBNs. Our publishing packages, which cover all of these, are $250, $750 and $1,500.

Do I need to buy my own ISBN?

Not always. KDP offers a free ISBN for paperbacks and hardcovers, but it can only be used on KDP, and Kindle eBooks don't need one. If you want to sell in several stores or be listed as the publisher, buy your own. Bowker lists one ISBN at $125 and ten at $295 (November 2026).

How much does it cost to publish a book with a ghostwriter?

Writing is priced by scope: length, research, number of interviews and timeline. Publishing is quoted separately, with packages from $250. Call +1 689-204-1396 for a free quote on your book.

Do I keep my royalties if I pay for publishing help?

With Book Publishing 360, yes. Every package includes 100% ownership rights. The book is published in your name and you keep your royalties.

Does traditional publishing cost anything?

A traditional publisher pays the production costs and pays you a royalty share. You pay nothing up front, but you give up control of the rights the publisher buys and most of the income from each sale.
